Baa Baa Black Sheep... Wool and So Much More!

During our morning Skills Block (a time dedicated to learning letters, sounds, (phonics), phonemic awareness, and shared reading), a nursery rhyme a week is introduced. Nursery rhymes are a wonderful way to teach these skills because they are short and easy for children to remember. The bonus is they give numerous opportunities to develop many levels of phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is defined as the awareness of sounds (phonemes) that make up spoken sounds. This includes rhyming, alliteration, ending, beginning sounds, and blending sounds to make words. There is overwhelming evidence that early learning of nursery rhymes and rhythmic poems, songs, and chants enhances early reading skills and phonemic awareness. On Fridays, we like to have a culminating, hands on activity to go with the rhyme. Today, the room was buzzing with the children making the next page in their nursery rhyme book, Baa, Baa Black Sheep. Using paper bags, construction paper and cotton, they made a wonderful keepsake to remember and share all they learned...wool and so much more!

I love your blog. It is so fun. It tells a lot of information that we do in school. I like how you show people that are in our class up on the blog and I like to see me! You are good teachers that we have. We kids at the orange table really like you. My favorite part of the day in our classroom is when we have literacy centers because we like a lot of stuff we can play. There's write the room, there's read the room, games, there is star names and the last one I'm going to tell is, I really like the puzzles!
Good night. I'll see you in the morning! Love, Joey Morris

I have never thought of learning in this way. I am definitly going to take this technique into consideration for future lesson plans! I think my mom who teaches grade 2 would benifit from this. Great blog and I can't wait to hear all about all of your other ideas. I know that I personally listen to music while I do homework and study. It allows me to make reference from music to what I am memorizing. My Calculus teacher also wrote all of his notes in a form of rap or other famous songs. It made it fun and easy to learn!
